Direct Give extended through Nov. 5

Did you hear it’s gratitude month? We are so grateful for your generous support of Genesee Hill Elementary School.

Our Direct Give campaign has been extended through Saturday, Nov. 5.

Give online at geneseehillpta.kindful.com

We are still $9,000 short of our goal of $25,000. If you haven’t done so yet, please donate by this Saturday. This goal amount goes to the general fund to help cover expenses such as school supplies for every child @ $25/student, technology resources, education specialists, and diversity, equity and inclusion training.

*If we reach our goal by the end of the week we will be providing coffee and morning treats later this month at drop off. Stay tuned!*

Direct Give update: There’s still time to donate

We are about halfway through our annual Direct Give campaign, but we still need your help to reach our fundraising goal of $25,000 for this school year.  Please consider making a tax-deductible donation at geneseehillpta.kindful.com today! The campaign will conclude on Oct. 31.

By now each GHE household should have received a Direct Give sticker postcard in the mail. If you haven’t received one, need a fresh one, or have questions for us, please contact fundraising@geneseehillpta.org.

We can’t wait to see where you have placed your stickers! Show your fox spirit at padlet.com/fundraising23/ghefoxes

Help make the Monster Mash a smash

The annual Genesee Hill Monster Mash dance is back! Mark your calendars for Oct. 28 from 6 to 9 pm in the school gym and cafeteria. Brought to you by the PTA, this event is free and open to all students and their families.

Costumes are optional. Enjoy food, games, crafts, dancing, and a photobooth, as well as a sensory space for those in search of a quieter experience.

Please consider volunteering your smiles and skills to help make this a fun, safe, and enjoyable event for all … something for our Monsters to remember for years to come. Sign up to volunteer here.

Share your feedback during the Month of Listening

Dear GHE families,

Our vision this year is to focus on building a strong community at Genesee Hill Elementary that centers the voices, experiences, and needs of all our students, families, and staff. In the month of October we will be rolling out our Community Needs Assessment, “The Month of Listening.”

There will be three parts to this assessment to try to capture everyone’s voice: 1) Individual family survey 2) Staff survey and 3) Listening sessions. We are inviting you to please complete the survey and consider joining one of our listening sessions where you identify. We are asking for your honest and open feedback on your needs and how the GHE PTA is doing in building a space of inclusion and belonging for you and your family.

Read more in the latest email from our PTA co-presidents.

It’s Disability History and Awareness Month

October is Disability History and Awareness Month, an annual event established to increase awareness, respect, and acceptance for people with disabilities and recognize the contributions disabled people have made to society.

One way to promote Disability History Month was established by a member of our own Genesee community. With the support of the Seattle Specials Education PTSA, PTA board member Leigh Ann Johnson helped create two virtual reading rooms. The rooms include links to videos, toolkits, and online activities—each with rich information.  You can explore a room designed for young children and another for teens and adults.

Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, teacher, or a student, you’ll find something of interest. Feel free to share the links in your networks and communities.

Screenagers Next Chapter Viewing Oct. 25

We’re kicking off our Genesee PTA Education Series with the opportunity to watch the documentary “Screenagers Next Chapter,” either on your own time or in person.

In “Screenagers Next Chapter: Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience,” filmmaker and physician Delaney Ruston uses a personal lens and professional eye to help us all flip the script on stress, anxiety, and depression. Ruston sets out to understand these challenges in our current screen-filled society, and how we as parents and schools empower kids to overcome mental health challenges and build emotional agility, communication savvy, and stress resilience.

Two ways to participate:

  • Watch the film virtually at your convenience from 10/17-10/31. Register to get the link here.
  • Watch the film in community with other families, followed by a facilitated discussion: 10/25, 7-9pm, Fairmount Park Elementary Cafeteria 3800 SW Findlay St., Seattle, WA, 98126. Register here.

The Genesee PTA Education Series is planned in conjunction with South Seattle Co-op Preschools, Fairmount Park Elementary, and Pathfinder K-8, and will continue throughout the school year.

The membership challenge is back!

Genesee Hill Community, we hope you will consider joining the PTA this year.

The PTA actively grows a sense of community experienced by all students, parents, teachers, and staff. By joining, you choose the level of involvement you prefer, and there is no wrong way to PTA. But at general membership meetings, you get a voice and a vote.

Thank you to all of the 119 members who have already joined this year!

The Membership Challenge is back for a third straight year. We are going head-to-head against our neighbor, Lafayette. It is a friendly competition to see which school can have the higher percentage of PTA members to their student count. The school with the greatest percentage wins.

All current members will count towards the tally. The competition will end on Oct. 21. The winner gets bragging rights for another year.

Even if you were a member in a prior year, you have to renew your membership but joining is easy and can be done online in a few steps here. To join with a fee waiver, click here.

The below graphic shows the current tally. We will provide updates throughout the duration of the challenge. Genesee Hill has 523 students and we have 119 members so far. We are hoping to reach 200.

F.U.N. volunteers needed

Help make environmental science education happen at Genesee Hill! Volunteers are needed for our Finding Urban Nature (F.U.N.) program.

Volunteers will teach four science lessons outdoors to a small group of 3rd graders this fall (Oct. 7, 21, 28 and Nov. 4.).

Your time commitment for each of the dates will be 11:55 to 2:20, plus the volunteer training that’s happening on Friday, Sept. 30th at 12:30 outside the main entrance to the school.

Interested? If so, please contact Vincent Della Pella at vadellapella@seattleschools.org.
