Special Presentation – Understanding Our Kids’ Online & Offline Social World: Friendships, Cliques & Power Plays

The Genesee Hill PTA is hosting bestselling children’s author Trudy Ludwig, who will be talking to parents about topics that have become more and more prevalent for kids growing up today: cyberbullying, social ostracism and how kids can engage in kind, caring ways.

Trudy’s emphasis is on empowerment – giving school communities the tips, tools, and resources that help children connect and engage with their peers in kind, caring ways. In this adult presentation, she’ll discuss the latest research in relational aggression, cyberbullying, the nature of boys’ and girls’ friendships, social ostracism and inclusion, kindness in a digital world, and many other timely and important topics related to bullying. On September 26, Trudy will lead student presentations for K-2 and 3-5 grades to address bullying/friendship issues in an age-appropriate manner. She will also provide a staff presentation to help school staff members in their ongoing efforts to promote a safe, social-emotional learning environment for our students.

The presentation will be at 6:30 pm Tuesday, September 25 at Genesee Hill Elementary, and all community members are welcome. RSVP here: https://bit.ly/2xsk6KJ. Child care will be provided for school age kids.

*We will have a handful of books available to purchase the night of the event.

June Volunteer of the Month

Congratulations to Brynne Burkhalter, our June Volunteer of the Month.

Brynne clocked over 30 hours in the month of May volunteering, but she’s always a shining star for being instrumental in the success of Staff Appreciation Week each year.

A little about Brynne: I have been a part of Schmitz/Genesee Hill for 7 years and counting. One daughter is at Genesee Hill now—3rd grader Ashton, and I have a Gen Hill alum—6th grade daughter Maryn. When I’m not running the two kids all over Timbuktu or volunteering at the elementary school or Madison MS, I work at the children’s consignment boutique, My Three Little Birds, near the Morgan Junction. I’m also heavily involved in the church we attend, helping run various children/family programs . I’m a big foodie—I love to cook and eat!! So you may see me out walking our puppy, biking, or at Barre3 working off some cals to support my hobby.

Skylar and Alicia Pond, owners of Sports Medicine Northwest (and parents to Sullivan Pond, 4th grade), have been sponsoring Schmitz Park/ Genesee Hill PTA for over five years. In addition to Sullivan, they also have a 9th grader at West Seattle High School, who attended Schmitz Park way back when there were only two classes per grade! In addition, we currently have four highly talented massage therapists.
