Calling all chess players! West Seattle Elementary will be hosting their first Chess Tournament on Saturday, 12/9 from 8 AM – 4 PM. This is a 5-round, state-qualifying tournament open to players in grades 1 through 6. Registration fee is $25 and the deadline to register is 12/8/17 (no refunds after 12/2; $5 refund fee). Registration for the Genesee Hill chapter of Girls on the Run (GOTR) opens this Monday, 12/4/17. GOTR is a nation-wide, after-school program that uses running to empower 3rd through 5th grade girls. Registrations are accepted until 2/16/18, however, there are only 15 spots on the team, so register early to reserve a spot! The program runs from 3/5 – 5/22, culminating with a 5K on 5/20/18. Classes will meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 – 4 PM. The cost of the 10-week program is $200. Scholarships are offered on a sliding scale so that any girl who wants to can participate – no one will be turned away based on inability to pay. Volunteer Coaches Needed for GOTR Spring 2018 Season – We still need more coaches for the GOTR 2018 season. We are very excited to be able to offer Study Club for the 2017-18 year!

Fall 2017 Study Club (for grades K-5) will start on Monday, September 11 and run through Friday, December 15, 2017. *NOTE: Early Dismissal Study Club will  be offered on Friday, December 15, 2017. Download a preview of the Study Club schedule and class options here.

Online registration will open on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 7:00 PM and will remain open until the session starts (September 11th) or all spots are filled.  Register online here (link will be live on 8/28/17 at 7 PM).

Study Club will be offered Monday – Tuesday & Thursday – Friday from 2:30 – 3:45 PM. On early release Wednesdays, Study Club will be offered as two back-to-back classes from 1:15 – 2:30 PM & 2:30 – 3:45 PM. Families may register for one or both classes as needed. In order to maintain staffing levels, we ask that families commit to one or more days of the week for the entire session. Students participating in Enrichment classes can also choose to register for only pre- and/or post- enrichment days (from September 11- 23 and December 11-14, 2017). Early Dismissal Study Club will also be offered on Friday, December 15, 2017 from 1:30 – 2:30 PM or 1:30 -3:45 PM. Tuition is $12.50/day ($12.50/class on early release Wednesdays); $22.50/day per child for extended Study Club (early dismissal). A limited number of 5 class punch cards are available for $75/card. These punch cards can be used to attend Study Club on any date during the regular session. Punch cards will be honored on a space available basis and require a minimum of 48 hours notice.

We have terrific new Study Club team of instructors on board.  The team will be led by Erin Dolan, with support from Jill Langley and Marisa Woodget two days a week. We are also fortunate to have Kiki Elbel return to Study Club on Wednesdays and select Fridays this year.  All our Study Club instructors are also Genesee Hill parents and have a combined wealth of experience working with elementary school age children.  Your kids will have a blast in Study Club this year!

Does your child love to play chess? Join other Genesee Hill chess players to form a team to compete in the TOPS Chess Fest on February 25, 2017 at TOPS School @ Seward (2500 Franklin Ave E, Seattle, 98102). Sending a team makes the event more fun, plus it qualifies Genesee Hill to potentially home a school trophy!  Entry fee is $16/player  (scholarships available) and the early registration deadline is February 15th.  Please contact Chau Pho Tung to register for the tournament.  More details available on the Chessmates website.

TOPS Chess Tournament flyer

Calling all 3rd – 5th grade girls! We are excited to offer a Girls on the Run chapter at Genesee Hill!  Girls on the Run (GOTR) is an after-school program that uses running to give girls the tools to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices, recognize their gifts and activate their power! GOTR is for 3^rd – 5^th grade girls of ALL fitness and ability levels. The 10 week GOTR curriculum helps teach girls about self-empowerment, building confidence, and healthy lifestyles. The program creatively integrates running to drive home these lessons, and the girls train all 10 weeks to run a 5K at the end of the season. Classes will meet twice a week (Monday & Wednesday) from 2:15 – 3:45 PM. 2017 season dates are March 6 – May 22, 2017, culminating with a fun 5K on May 21, 2016.  All girls must be able to commit to BOTH practice days and times in order to participate. Cost is based on a sliding scale and scholarships are available so that any girl who wants to can participate.
