Our Volunteer of the Month is Lori Sherick.

Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Month for December, Lori Sherick. She is mom to Samantha and Joe, 3rd graders.

“When I am not volunteering at Schmitz Park I Iike to golf, run, snowboard and go to Bakery Nouveau.” Lori Sherick
For the short month of December, Lori worked 14.4 hours.  She worked in Ms Noreng/ Ms. Frazzini’s classroom as well as Ms. Well’s classroom.  She volunteered to assist with the Global Passport Challenge, for field trips, and as a lunchroom monitor.  Thank you so much for all of your hard work Lori!  You have earned the “Volunteer of the Month” parking space for January.

“She came and talked to the kiddos in room 8 about how to use sensory materials when our bodies need to calm down or rev up a bit. She also helped our class make a personal fidget for each student to take home and try out.” – Ms. Frazzini

“Lorie Sherick has been an incredible volunteer. She comes without fail every week to read with the kids. She is so patient and understanding in meeting the students’ needs. All of the kids look forward to her coming and will ask if she can read with them.” – Ms. Wells

NOVEMBER VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH IS TIEA HANSON

vofm novThank you to Tiea Hanson, mom to Bella & Zoe. She is our volunteer of the month for November. She has logged 15.7 hours in the short month of November.  She has helped in the classroom, with the global passport group, and volunteered 7.1 hours as a recess monitor (thank you!!).

She is a huge asset to the Spring Auction Committee and enjoys gardening and anything creative in her spare time. We appreciate her support of our school and she has earned the parking spot up front for the month of December.

“Schmitz Park is a great school and I love being able to help out”.- Tiea Hanson

“Tiea is amazing. She rocked our school art projects last year and has come back again this year. She always comes through!” Pam Linxwieler, Auction Co-Chair

“Tiea is so great! She is willing to help in any way I need. I even sent her a desperate email asking if she would come in on an off day to help and her reply was simple, it said “gladly, I’ll see you tomorrow.” She is happy to help in any way she can which I love but the kids benefit from too.

I love having her as a parent in my room!”, Mrs. Marroquin (1st grade teacher)

PTA General Meeting Tonight — Thursday, November 19 at 6:30 pm

PTA MeetingPlease join us for our General PTA Meeting this Thursday, November 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the school lunchroom.  Childcare is provided at no charge for school age kids in the school gym.

Agenda items include:

  1. Katie Stemp, a Schmitz Park parent and owner of Seattle Farm School will present her ideas for how the Dakota substation property across from the new Genesee Hill school site could be used to benefit our elementary students and the community at large with modern day Home Economics curriculum – gardening, cooking, sewing and environmental education, as well as provide a multi-purpose gathering space for parents, staff and other neighborhood groups.
  2. Building Transition Committee discussion and update – this committee will lay out a work plan for making sure that we have everything in place to hit the ground running at the Genesee Hill building in September. The committee will be co-chaired by our assistant principal, Ms. Dunn, and our PTA Vice President, Kelley O’Connor, and we are now looking for several staff members and parents to join them in rolling up their project management sleeves.
  3. Principal Update
  4. Other updates from: Advocacy and Legislative, Treasurer and other officer reports.

Building Transition Committee

new school picturesOur PTA Board and Schmitz Park staff-parent Building Leadership Team have started the process of convening a Building Transition Committee and laying out a work plan for making sure that we have everything in place to hit the ground running at the Genesee Hill building in September. The committee will be co-chaired by our assistant principal, Ms. Dunn, and our PTA Vice President, Kelley O’Connor, and we are now looking for several staff members and parents to join them in rolling up their project management sleeves. Seattle Public Schools has never opened a new elementary school of this size before and has not moved an existing program like this for many years, so this is another way that this new building will be a standard-setting opportunity for the Schmitz Park community. The Committee will take on everything from traffic planning (cars, bicycles and pedestrians) to facilities usage to identifying what materials, programs and even traditions we bring with us (and which we leave behind). There will be work enough for everyone, so if you have particular interests, talents and skills you would like to contribute, please contact Ms. Dunn (eadunn@seattleschools.org).

Show them what 29 looks like! – November 18 School Board Meeting

A community group of parents and educators has organized attendance at the next SPS Board Meeting scheduled for November 18, 4:15 p.m. @ the Stanford Center  (2445 3rd Ave S.) to keep the pressure on regarding cuts and class sizes – accountability – and keeping kids/schools as top priority (rather than central office raises, etc.)
There are two sign ups at the link below:
1. one to get 29 kids to the school board meeting (illustrating our current class sizes)
2. the second to get 12 parents/teachers to give 2 minute public testimony on the issue
