Welcome to the Advocacy Page!

Advocacy work is at the heart of the PTA. A number of the biggest advancements in children’s education in the United States have happened because of PTA advocacy. These accomplishments include the creation of kindergarten classes, child labor laws, hot and healthy lunch programs, mandatory immunizations, and school safety.

Supporting advocacy work is one of the best ways that you can support all children getting the excellent education that every child needs and every child deserves. How can you get involved with this? 

How to Support Advocacy 

First, you can join the Genesee Hill PTA so that your voice and your vote become a part of the membership.

Second, you can follow advocacy initiatives at local, state and national levels (Seattle Council PTSA, Seattle Special Education PTSA, Washington State PTA and National PTA).

Third, you can contact our District 6 representatives about issues you care about: School Board Director Leslie Harris and City Councimember Lisa Herbold.

Fourth, you can join our Advocacy Committee to see what current advocacy issues are on the table right now!  Email legislative@geneseehillpta.org to join.

Current Advocacy Issues 

Your voice matters!

Washington State PTA has a grassroots advocacy platform, voted on by the members, that covers a wide variety of important topics that impact children and youth. Topics such as preserving current funding levels, closing the digital divide, increasing school nurses and counselors, eliminating youth suicide, mitigating gun violence, supporting the needs of students with disabilities, and mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change, among others. Now we need to turn those words on paper into action! We need your presence! We need your voice! We need your stories!

As part of our ongoing “Focus on Advocacy” program to keep members informed and engaged throughout the session, we will again be holding our annual Focus on Advocacy Day (Monday, January 17, 2022) and Focus on Advocacy Week (January 17-21, 2022) virtually this year. Make sure you are subscribed to and read our weekly Leadership News and Focus on Advocacy newsletter for updated and additional information.

Legislators need to hear from you…their constituents…so they understand how important these topics are to families, students, and communities. Together, we need to urge them to turn these personal stories into actual programs, policies, and laws that improve the lives of children and youth. Washington’s children and youth need you!
